Due to their unique genetic disposition, twins offer scientists unprecedented insights into the interaction between genetics and environments. Twin studies examine the genetic similarities between monozygotic and dizygotic twins to draw conclusions about the influence of genes and environmental factors.

Science and Twins

GERTRUD is an initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development with the aim of laying the foundation for a unified registration of German twins modeled on global databases. It aims to create new collaborations and use resources efficiently in German twin research.

How to Register

If you and your twin are interested in being registered in GERTRUD (the first German twin registry), then please sign up directly online using our registration form.

Adult pairs of twins can register themselves in GERTRUD as well as parents of twins can register their minor children.

We are a diverse team of scientists from neuroscience to cognition and related research areas. We investigate the influence of a wide variety of environmental factors on the human brain.

GERTRUD

German Twin Registry

GERTRUD (“German Twin Registry under Development”) is the first nationwide German registry for twins and other multiples of all ages. The registry aims to promote the participation of identical, fraternal, and other multiples in scientific research.

The registry is a research initiative in the Environmental Neuroscience field at the Max-Planck-Institute for Human Development (MPIB) and their cooperation partners (University Hospital Tübingen, Bielefeld University, Medical School Hamburg, Max-Planck-Institut for Empirical Aesthetics und Saarland University). It lays the foundation for a uniform registry of German twins modeled on renowned registries in Sweden, Australia and Great Britain.

GERTRUD is an initiative from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development that aims to lay the foundation for a uniform registration of German twins and multiples modeled on global registries. The idea is to create new collaborations and share resources in research.

Our Vision

Our goal is to explore the effects of the physical environment on the individual. Our main focus is on the different factors of urban life and their impact on the human brain, behavior and mental health.
